1. Liberal Arts Colleges
The colleges and universities
under liberal arts and sciences education system are four-year colleges. After you complete four years at these colleges,
you will get a bachelor degree, either Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. Some grants Master degree programs, but no
PhD. These colleges are the most popular colleges for international students
like Myanmar students. Mostly are private colleges, where students can gain scholarships
and aids. Liberal Arts course make a student to be a well rounded person. For example, a student who majors in history needs
to take other courses in science like mathematics.
2. National Universities
There are two kinds of universities
under this category. Some are private and some are public (State universities). They prepare a student lead to a professional
career. For example, an engineering student just only needs to specialize in engineering related courses. Mostly are PhD and
Master Degree granting universities. They are also known as graduate schools.
Private universities are more
difficult to gain admissions than liberal arts colleges. They will grant scholarships and aids too.
Public universities generally
admit a wider range of students than private universities. You can get admissions from those schools; however, you have to
pay much higher tuitions than in-state students because you are an international student. They do not usually give as much
scholarships and aids as private colleges for international students.
3. Community Colleges
These colleges provide two-year associate degree program, either associate of arts (A.A) or associate of science (A.S).
You can get them in only two years; however, you will not gain a bachelor degree. If you want to pursue a bachelor degree,
you can transfer to a state university or other college after two years at community college. Community colleges are known
for its low tuitions. They cost half amount of the money that you have to pay for liberal arts colleges. But, remember that
they will not grant you any scholarships or aids. (Some may give you a little form of aids.)
